Orlando Pirates Team Hospitalized After Accident

Orlando Pirates head coach Abdeslam Ouaddou and five members of his technical staff were injured in a serious road traffic accident late Sunday night, 31 August.

The incident occurred on the R21 highway, as the team was returning from a 3–0 victory against Chippa United in Gqeberha, Eastern Cape.

Upon encountering a collision involving two vehicles, Coach Ouaddou and the staffers disembarked from the team bus to assist the victims, only to be struck by a third vehicle, a Nissan, that veered into the stationary convoy, resulting in serious injuries for several individuals.

All six injured members, Ouaddou included, were immediately hospitalised and are currently receiving medical care. The club confirmed they are in close communication with attending medical professionals, focusing entirely on their recovery.

Orlando Pirates issued a statement: “At this stage our priority is the health and wellbeing of our colleagues. The Club has made arrangements to ensure that the affected individuals and their families receive all the necessary support during this difficult time. We ask for privacy and respect for those involved as they focus on recovery.”

The timing of the crash, on the heels of a strong victory, has cast a shadow over what should have been celebratory spirits.

The wellbeing of the coach and staff remains the club’s top priority as supporters and teammates await further updates.
